As a vegan myself it’s important to communicate with others about this lifestyle choice without pushing my views in their faces. This blog will hopefully serve as a tool to keep in touch but also to share valuable resources for fun things to do and places to eat in both Los Angeles and Portland, OR. However, I do think it is important to be open to people’s decision to remain responsible omnivores, as Alex has done, this site will serve as a place for people to learn from one another about recipes and restaurants that can make everyone happy.
Maddy:
Growing up in Portland exposed me to some very important issues concerning our environment and how our lives impact the world around us. As I grew up I realized that food played a large part in this and that I wanted to make the personal choice to become a vegetarian, which I did at the age of 12. In high school I had a vegan friend that got me hip to all the benefits of eating vegan, not only health wise, but for the environment as well and the transformation was complete.
Throughout college I encountered alot of vegans that were really preachy and would be so digusted by people eating meat that they would audibly “ewww” to them. Not only did I think this was rude but I kept thinking that if I were a person that ate meat and I had someone doing that to me I would probably just eat more meat to spite them. I really think that the only way to get someone to appreciate vegan food and the reasons (political, social or otherwise) behind the diet is to talk to them in a reasonable way and allow them the freedom to make their own decisions.

Some people just love meat and cheese and that’s cool with me I just want people to be aware of the impact their food choices have on the world around them which is why it is important to eat free range meat and eggs as well as consuming organic and locally grown foods- not just meats but veggies as well. I hope this blog will serve as a place for all people to learn from one another, not preach and just talk about good food and the things we care about.
